Those who chose EPDItaly share their story: La Matassina

Massimo Fumagalli, Chief Commercial Officer  and Technical Manager

La Matassina operates in the structural engineering sector, specializing in the production of tying systems and fibers for concrete reinforcement. Over the years, it has developed an offering aimed at the main players in the construction supply chain, positioning itself as a technical partner for designers, companies, and industry operators.

Based in Isola Vicentina (Vicenza), the company is equipped for the production of steel fibers and polymer fibers (both macro and micro), intended for various structural uses. Alongside production, it features an internal mechanical workshop for the creation of dedicated plants and machinery, as well as the design of tailor-made solutions based on specific application needs.

In this journey, the Venetian company decided to rely on EPDItaly to undertake an EPD certification process for its entire range of steel and polymer fibers produced at the Isola Vicentina plant.

In this regard, we interviewed Eng. Massimo Fumagalli, Chief Commercial Officer  and Technical Manager , who shared the motivations behind this choice, the benefits gained from publishing verified environmental data, and the role of EPDItaly in a market increasingly attentive to transparency and sustainability.

What are the main reasons that pushed you toward voluntary EPD certification?

The motivation that drove our company toward voluntary EPD certification goes beyond simple compliance with sustainability requirements; it acts as a strategic lever for corporate growth and efficiency.

Which of your company’s products have obtained the EPD? What are their main characteristics?

The entire range of steel fibers (identified by the brand LA GRAMIGNA) and polymer fibers (identified by the brand GRAMINFLEX), produced at the Isola Vicentina plant, has obtained the EPD. These are products with a wide application spectrum, used in various fields such as ready-mix concrete, screeds, and precasting. it is a comprehensive range of solutions capable of meeting diverse technological and application needs.

What are the main advantages obtained from publishing the Environmental Product Declaration? What are the impacts on the end consumer?

The main advantages resulting from the publication of the EPD concern both market access and internal efficiency, as well as the company’s positioning. Firstly, the EPD represents a fundamental tool for participating in public tenders, as it allows for the demonstration of compliance with Minimum Environmental Criteria (CAM) and for obtaining higher scores in the main sustainability protocols such as LEED, BREEAM, or Envision. At the same time, it facilitates access to incentives and benefits related to sustainable construction, thanks to the traceability of the products’ environmental content.

In terms of transparency, it allows for the communication of objective data verified by third parties, reducing the risk of greenwashing and strengthening brand credibility toward customers and stakeholders. Finally, the LCA study at the core of the EPD allows for a structured analysis of the product’s entire life cycle, identifying inefficiencies and supporting a path of continuous improvement aimed at reducing environmental impacts and operational costs.

Do you think EPDItaly can contribute to spreading the culture of product sustainability?

It can contribute significantly. A possible development could be the organization of dedicated courses for professional orders or the creation of synergies with industry associations to encourage a wider dissemination of the culture of product sustainability.

In your opinion, how important is the presence of sustainable Italian products within a Program Operator that makes the international network one of its strengths?

The presence of sustainable Italian products represents a strategic asset for an international Program Operator. Italy is, in fact, a reference point in Europe for the circular economy and resource efficiency, and the presence of these products contributes to raising the overall qualitative level of the network. At the same time, the value of “Made in Italy” translates into controlled supply chains and technological innovation—elements that strengthen the credibility of the solutions proposed at an international level. In a market increasingly oriented toward ESG criteria, this allows the Program Operator to differentiate itself by offering products that combine sustainability and manufacturing quality.
