Who chose EPDItaly tells its story: Falegnameria Scarin

Eleonora Scarin, partner and director of Falegnameria Scarin

Falegnameria Scarin has been operating in the Verbano Cusio Ossola area since 1986 and specializes in woodworking for the manufacture of fixtures, doors and windows, furniture, and custom solutions. Over the years, the company has consolidated an approach based on quality craftsmanship, attention to detail, and the constant evolution of technical and production skills.

The business has gradually developed through targeted investments in the modernization of processes and machinery, integrating the latest technologies, such as numerical control systems, to respond more effectively to design and construction requirements. The search for high-performance materials and attention to environmental aspects are now central elements in the company’s offering, which is geared towards combining customization, efficiency, and sustainability.

The Piedmont-based company decided to rely on EPDItaly to obtain the Environmental Product Declaration for wooden doors and windows. In this regard, we interviewed Eleonora Scarin, partner and director of the company, who told us about the reasons behind the decision to undertake a voluntary EPD certification process, the benefits obtained from the publication of verified environmental data, and the role of EPDItaly in an increasingly international and sustainability-oriented market.

What were the main reasons that led you to seek voluntary EPD certification?

The reasons were primarily personal. In recent years, we have placed sustainability at the heart of our business, and we felt the need to move from intuition to concrete data.
We were driven by a great curiosity: we wanted to understand precisely what the real environmental impact of our flagship product, windows and doors, was. It was a step we wanted to take to send a concrete signal, while remaining an artisan carpentry workshop that manufactures many other products, from furniture to furnishings, stairs, and doors. For us, EPD is a tool for gaining in-depth knowledge of our main product and continuing to do our work in an increasingly conscious manner.

Which of your company’s products have obtained EPD certification? What are their main characteristics?

We have obtained EPD certification for our wooden windows and doors, which are available in two different thicknesses. The distinctive feature of our approach is vertical integration: we manage the entire supply chain internally, from the procurement of raw materials to painting and installation. We are aware that internalization represents a challenge for sustainability, but this is precisely why EPD is a fundamental tool for us to monitor our impact and identify areas for improvement, constantly evaluating whether external solutions can offer even higher environmental standards.

What are the main advantages of publishing the Environmental Product Declaration? What are the implications for the end consumer?
The main advantage was that it put us to the test. Publishing the EPD allowed us to seriously analyze the impact of all our processes, transforming our attention to the environment into clear and verified numbers. Instead of simply saying that we care about the environment, we now have an objective tool that demonstrates this to the market, helping us understand where we can still improve. We want to offer our customers and professionals the security of an informed choice. Those who buy our windows and doors today are not only looking at the aesthetic side, but also want to know what they are bringing into their homes. With the EPD, we provide a sort of ‘transparent label’ that facilitates the work of architects and designers and guarantees the end customer that there is a concrete and measurable commitment behind the product.

Do you think EPDItaly can help spread the culture of product sustainability?
Absolutely. I believe that EPDItaly plays a fundamental role because it acts as an authoritative reference point that brings together all the companies that are truly committed to the environment. The fact that there is a portal where serious and verified certifications are available provides clarity in the market: for us companies, it is an incentive to meet high standards, while for technicians and customers, it becomes a guarantee of reliability. When all the leading players in the sector come together under one umbrella, sustainability ceases to be an isolated case and becomes a common direction, pushing the entire supply chain towards construction quality that is increasingly attentive to the planet.

How important do you think the presence of sustainable Italian products is within a Program Operator that makes its international network one of its strengths?
It is fundamental. For our company, which operates in an area characterized by a strong presence of international professionals and second home owners from abroad, the global reach of EPDItaly is a huge competitive advantage. In this context, EPDItaly acts as a strategic bridge: it not only brings together companies, technicians, and customers, but it allows them to do so by speaking a common and universal language, that of certified sustainability. Abroad, environmental awareness is often very high, and foreign customers seek objective guarantees, not just aesthetic ones. Being part of an international network through an Italian program operator allows us to showcase the excellence of our ‘Made in Italy’ products with the strength of verified data. In short, it allows us to reassure foreign customers or designers about the quality of our products, offering them the transparency that is now a prerequisite for competing in today’s markets.
