ISKRAEMECO is an international company headquartered in Kranj, Slovenia, specialized in the development and production of smart metering solutions for electricity, water, heat and gas. With a strong focus on innovation and digital technologies, the company provides advanced metering systems for residential, commercial, industrial and grid applications, supporting the transition toward smarter and more sustainable energy management.

The Slovenian company decided to rely on EPDItaly to obtain Environmental Product Declarations for a significant part of its smart metering portfolio.

In this context, we interviewed Abdelhameed Qotb Ali, Head of Product Management Sector, who explained the reasons behind the company’s decision to pursue voluntary EPD certification, the benefits gained from publishing verified environmental data, and the role of EPDItaly within an increasingly international and sustainability-oriented market.

What are the main motivations that pushed you toward voluntary EPD certification?

Our main motivation for pursuing voluntary EPD certification is to demonstrate transparency and environmental responsibility. This aligns with our sustainability strategy and meets growing customer demand for eco-friendly products. EPDs help us quantify environmental impacts across the product lifecycle, strengthen our market competitiveness, and build trust with our customers through verified third-party data.

What product(s) in your company has/have obtained EPD? What are its main characteristics?

Currently, almost two thirds of our portfolio is certified, with the remaining third under preparation. This covers our entire smart metering family for residential applications (under the model IE.x) and for commercial, industrial, and grid applications (under the model MT880). The team is now working on the portfolio for the German market, focusing on two main product models.

What are the main benefits gained from publishing the Environmental Product Declaration? What are the expected effects on the market?

Publishing EPDs provides verified, third-party environmental data for the product lifecycle, based on LCA. This helps us align with the EU Green Deal and meet sustainability reporting obligations. Internally, it supports our sustainability KPIs and ESG reporting. For customers, EPD certification and other sustainability activities help us and our clients in regions with strict sustainability requirements. It also showcases how we incorporate ecodesign principles into our products and minimize their environmental and climate impacts throughout their lifetime.

How important, in your opinion, is the presence of sustainable products within a Program Operator (EPDItaly) that makes international networking one of its strength?

The presence of sustainable products in a Program Operator like EPDItaly is very important. It sets a strong example and encourages companies to improve. Globally aligned EPD rules are also essential, so data is comparable and credible across markets. Making EPDs a requirement would push all companies to raise the environmental performance of their products and drive real progress.
