EPDItaly: 10 years of commitment to sustainability

On June 10, 2025, the celebration event for the tenth anniversary of EPDItaly, the Italian Program Operator for Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), was held at the Via Rieti Auditorium in Rome. The conference, entitled “Measuring, Assuring, Communicating Transparently,” was an opportunity to reflect on the evolution of the system and the growing importance of environmental transparency in all production chains.

After opening remarks by Lorenzo Orsenigo, President and General Manager of ICMQ, the speech by Christian Donath, CEO of ECO Platform, provided an overview of the international context and the role of EPDs at the European level. Francesco Carnelli, Head of Sales at ICMQ, illustrated the steady growth of the program, highlighting the main milestones of a 10-year journey made up of numbers, innovation and openness to new sectors.

A thematic panel delved into the perspectives of the construction sector, with Ugo Pannuti, Head of Innovation at ICMQ, and Caterina Gargari, professor at the University of Pisa and CAM expert, outlining the technical and regulatory framework of the building sector.

The first panel discussion, moderated by Alfredo Martini, focused on the growing interest in EPDs in non-construction sectors. Laura Pessoni, Head of Innovation Design of Artemide Spa, Averaldo Farri, Division Director of Zucchetti Centro Sistemi Spa, Mario Mosca, Head of Performance Management and Innovability of ENEL Group, Valentina Niccolucci, researcher at the University of Siena, and Valeria Mangani, President of the Sustainable Fashion Innovation Society, brought concrete experiences, complementary points of view and distinctive approaches to tell how environmental measurement is steadily entering sectors such as design, energy, electronics, food and fashion.

The second panel discussion, again moderated by Martini, involved certification bodies working on EPDItaly. Speakers included Primiano De Rosa-Giglio, Environmental Sustainability Business Unit Manager of TÜV Italia, Mirco Volanti, Product Coordinator EPD & CFP Verification Services of SGS ICS Italia, Alida Falbo, Sustainability Area Manager of IMQ Spa, and Manuel Mari, Product Sustainability Manager of ICMQ. The discussion highlighted day-to-day operational challenges related to data verification, dialogue with businesses and the evolving regulatory framework.

Pietro Agrello, Director of the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, concluded the proceedings, emphasizing the role of EPDs in CAM and within the Made Green in Italy program, pointing to them as one of the most promising tools for integrating sustainability and public policy.
