Marco Brustolin, technical department manager Micheletto Pavimentazioni
Micheletto Pavimentazioni has been working in the field of outdoor paving and stone cladding for more than 60 years. It is a leading company in self-locking concrete paving and has an in-house research and development laboratory. Every stage of production-from the selection of raw materials to the finished product-is followed with great care and according to a strict quality control protocol. This approach enables Micheletto to offer certified materials that comply with current regulations and are guaranteed over time.
The Veneto-based company decided to rely on EPDItaly to obtain EPD certification on different types of products.
In this regard, we interviewed Marco Brustolin, head of the Technical Department, who told us about the motivations that led the company to adopt EPD certification and what are the advantages of such a document.
What are the main motivations that pushed you toward voluntary EPD certification?
Operating in the building materials industry, particularly in the concrete sector, means facing the daily challenge of combining high technical performance with an increasingly under-observed environmental footprint. Talking about sustainability, for a company like ours, requires not only awareness and responsibility, but also concrete and recognized tools to measure and communicate the results achieved. EPD certification represents a strategic opportunity for us to break out of a simplified narrative, which is often penalizing for our sector, and affirm the real value of our products also in environmental terms. Thanks to EPD, we can offer transparency, verifiable data and a solid basis for participating in sustainable construction projects, credibly contributing to the construction industry’s ecological transition.
Which product(s) in your company has obtained EPD? What are its main features?
Our path with the Environmental Product Declaration has seen a twofold evolution: on the one hand, we have updated the pre-existing EPD related to our Elite, Premium, BIG and Rimade ECO series, consolidating the environmental transparency of products already widely recognized in the market for their aesthetic quality, robustness and application versatility. On the other hand, we chose to certify new product families, extending certification to the Micro, Quartz and Filter series as well. Added to this is the drafting of a new EPD certification related to two other product types: road kerbs and MOB face blocks. These updates reflect our 360-degree commitment to offering construction solutions with low environmental impact, capable of integrating into modern urban and infrastructural contexts, with technical and environmental performance transparently documented.
What are the main benefits gained from publishing the Environmental Product Declaration? What are the impacts on the end consumer?
The publication of the EPD allows us to clearly and scientifically communicate the environmental performance of our products throughout their life cycle, increasing trust on the part of designers, public bodies and end customers. For the end consumer, this translates into a more informed choice based on objective parameters and transparency. In addition, EPD is a strategic element in responding effectively to market demands, especially in public and private buildings that adhere to sustainability protocols such as LEED or CAM.
Do you think EPDItaly can help spread the culture of product sustainability?
Without a doubt. The presence of an Italian Program Operator such as EPDItaly is essential to accompany companies on the path to sustainability, offering a technical, regulatory and cultural point of reference that is perfectly immersed in the national production context. In an area as complex as EPDs, having a qualified Italian interlocutor makes it possible to interpret international requirements correctly, while promoting the homogeneity and quality of environmental declarations. Moreover, EPDItaly is not just a technical tool: it plays an active role in promoting a culture of sustainability based on objective data, helping to raise awareness in both the production and design worlds.
How important, in your opinion, is the presence of sustainable Italian products within a Program Operator that makes international networking one of its strengths?
The presence of Italian products within a program with an international scope is strategic, both to enhance the excellence of our production sector and to ensure a competitiveness consistent with global dynamics. Being able to count on an operator like EPDItaly, which adheres to international circuits and recognizes the validity of EPDs at the European and global level, allows us to access wider markets, responding to sustainability needs with shared and comparable standards.
