After\u00a0publishing\u00a0EPDs for several<\/u>\u00a0<\/u>product<\/u> families<\/u><\/a>, LATICRETE Europe, the European\u00a0subsidiary of LATICRETE International, a global group\u00a0active in tile\u00a0installation\u00a0systems and construction\u00a0chemicals, continues\u00a0its\u00a0journey with EPDItaly with a new Environmental Product Declaration for HYDRO BAN\u00ae \u2013 ACQUASHIELD READY, one of the company\u2019s\u00a0main\u00a0waterproofing\u00a0solutions. Established in 2016, LATICRETE Europe has\u00a0developed a model based on local production, technological\u00a0innovation and a direct\u00a0presence in key\u00a0European markets.<\/p>\n

This new publication\u00a0is\u00a0also the company\u2019s first EPD for an individual\u00a0product and provides an opportunity to explore the role of LCA in assessing\u00a0environmental\u00a0impacts, the evolving market demand for environmental information and the future outlook for EPDs.<\/p>\n

We\u00a0spoke with Matteo De Somma, Technical Director of LATICRETE Europe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

After<\/strong> the first <\/strong>EPDs<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>published<\/strong> with <\/strong>EPDItaly<\/strong>, <\/strong>you<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>chose<\/strong> to continue <\/strong>this<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>journey<\/strong> with HYDRO BAN\u00ae \u2013 ACQUASHIELD READY. <\/strong>What<\/strong> led <\/strong>you<\/strong> to <\/strong>extend<\/strong> the <\/strong>Environmental<\/strong> Product <\/strong>Declaration<\/strong> to <\/strong>this<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>solution<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>as<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>well<\/strong>?<\/strong><\/p>\n

After\u00a0publishing\u00a0our first EPDs, we\u00a0wanted to continue along\u00a0this\u00a0path of environmental\u00a0transparency by extending the assessment to HYDRO BAN\u00ae and ACQUASHIELD READY as\u00a0well. They are essentially the same\u00a0product, included in two\u00a0different\u00a0product\u00a0ranges\u00a0within\u00a0our company, and represent\u00a0one of our\u00a0main\u00a0waterproofing\u00a0solutions, if\u00a0not\u00a0our\u00a0flagship\u00a0product overall. For this\u00a0reason, it\u00a0was\u00a0important for us to develop an EPD for it\u00a0as\u00a0well.<\/p>\n

In addition, designers and clients are increasingly\u00a0asking for EPD documentation for this\u00a0type of product. For adhesives and sealants, which\u00a0we\u00a0addressed\u00a0previously, this\u00a0need\u00a0is\u00a0even more evident, also in relation to the Italian Minimum Environmental\u00a0Criteria (CAM). Waterproofing\u00a0products, by contrast, do not\u00a0fall\u00a0within the scope of CAM: this\u00a0is\u00a0one of the reasons\u00a0why\u00a0this EPD came\u00a0at a later stage.<\/p>\n

Which<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>aspects<\/strong> of the <\/strong>product<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>emerged<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>most<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>clearly<\/strong> from the LCA <\/strong>carried<\/strong> out for <\/strong>this<\/strong> EPD?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The life cycle\u00a0assessment\u00a0helped\u00a0us\u00a0quantify and gain a deeper and more accurate understanding of the environmental\u00a0contributions\u00a0associated with the product, providing\u00a0us with a clear\u00a0picture of its impact across the different\u00a0stages of its life cycle.<\/p>\n

The value of this\u00a0document\u00a0lies\u00a0not\u00a0only in the figures\u00a0obtained, but\u00a0also in the fact\u00a0that\u00a0it\u00a0makes\u00a0what\u00a0we do in terms of sustainability\u00a0measurable. LCA is\u00a0therefore\u00a0not\u00a0only a tool for environmental\u00a0communication, but\u00a0also a means of helping\u00a0us\u00a0better\u00a0understand\u00a0our\u00a0processes and, where\u00a0necessary, develop and improve\u00a0them.<\/p>\n

How can the <\/strong>results<\/strong> of an LCA guide the <\/strong>development<\/strong> or <\/strong>improvement<\/strong> of LATICRETE <\/strong>products<\/strong>?<\/strong><\/p>\n

LCA is an essential\u00a0tool for improving the environmental performance of our production processes and products. It can help us\u00a0better\u00a0understand\u00a0where to take action and which\u00a0environmental or logistical\u00a0considerations\u00a0need to be taken\u00a0into account in order to optimise\u00a0certain\u00a0processes. From this\u00a0perspective, it\u00a0also\u00a0supports\u00a0innovation and the optimisation of existing\u00a0products, as\u00a0well\u00a0as the development of new ones.<\/p>\n

Compared<\/strong> with <\/strong>your<\/strong> first <\/strong>experience<\/strong> with <\/strong>EPDs<\/strong>, <\/strong>has<\/strong> the way <\/strong>customers<\/strong>, designers and <\/strong>other<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>industry<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>professionals<\/strong> use or <\/strong>request<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>environmental<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>product<\/strong> information <\/strong>changed<\/strong>?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Less\u00a0than a year\u00a0has\u00a0passed\u00a0since\u00a0our first EPDs, but\u00a0we\u00a0have\u00a0certainly\u00a0noticed\u00a0growing\u00a0interest. Environmental\u00a0sustainability\u00a0is\u00a0becoming\u00a0increasingly\u00a0important, and I believe\u00a0it\u00a0will be one of the key\u00a0issues in the years\u00a0ahead.<\/p>\n

At present, many\u00a0EPDs are requested in connection with CAM requirements, particularly in Italy. There\u00a0is\u00a0also a certain\u00a0degree of awareness of the issue\u00a0across the rest of Europe, although\u00a0this\u00a0attention\u00a0is\u00a0still\u00a0mainly\u00a0focused on public-sector\u00a0projects. In private-sector\u00a0projects, where\u00a0there\u00a0is no specific\u00a0regulatory\u00a0requirement, this\u00a0type of documentation\u00a0is\u00a0still\u00a0often\u00a0not\u00a0considered\u00a0necessary.<\/p>\n

However, I believe\u00a0that\u00a0EPDs\u00a0will\u00a0become\u00a0increasingly common in the private sector over the next\u00a0few\u00a0years, because meeting environmental\u00a0requirements can add\u00a0value to both\u00a0buildings and design projects. Investors, particularly major investors, will\u00a0pay\u00a0growing\u00a0attention to this\u00a0type of certification: they\u00a0will no longer be satisfied with a product\u00a0that\u00a0simply\u00a0performs\u00a0well, but\u00a0will\u00a0also\u00a0expect\u00a0it to be environmentally\u00a0sustainable.<\/p>\n

This<\/strong> new <\/strong>publication<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>marks<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>another<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>step<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>along<\/strong> the <\/strong>path<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>you<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>have<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>undertaken<\/strong>. Do <\/strong>you<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>plan<\/strong> to <\/strong>progressively<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>extend<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>EPDs<\/strong> to <\/strong>other<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>solutions<\/strong> in the LATICRETE Europe range?<\/strong><\/p>\n

At present, we\u00a0already\u00a0have\u00a0fairly\u00a0broad\u00a0coverage: the EPDs\u00a0published so far cover several\u00a0product\u00a0ranges, from adhesives and sealants to underlayments. This, however, is the first EPD we\u00a0have\u00a0developed for an individual\u00a0product.<\/p>\n

We\u00a0cannot\u00a0rule out the possibility\u00a0that\u00a0EPDs for individual\u00a0products, rather\u00a0than\u00a0entire\u00a0product\u00a0ranges, will be increasingly\u00a0requested in the future, and we\u00a0therefore\u00a0expect to develop more of them. This\u00a0will\u00a0also\u00a0depend on market demand. At the same time, we are currently\u00a0focusing part of our\u00a0attention on another\u00a0type of environmental\u00a0declaration, the FDES, which\u00a0is\u00a0specific to the French market.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
