This structure ensures a comprehensive and transparent assessment, providing a clear understanding of the associated environmental impacts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Upstream Module<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Includes all supply chain activities up to the delivery of materials to the machine manufacturer:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Raw material preparation, from resource extraction to production of machine components, including spare parts.<\/li>\n<li>Intermediate processes for the manufacture and assembly of components and spare parts that do not take place in the machine manufacturer&#8217;s plant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Core Module<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This module covers processes internal to the manufacturer, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Energy production (e.g., electricity and fuels such as gasoline or methane) used in the core module, including extraction, refining, and transportation to the end user.<\/li>\n<li>On-site energy generation, if self-produced by the company (e.g., through photovoltaic panels).<\/li>\n<li>Direct emissions at the production plant.<\/li>\n<li>Consumption of water and auxiliary materials.<\/li>\n<li>Assembly and production of the machinery unit (including testing phase).<\/li>\n<li>Internal transportation.<\/li>\n<li>Treatment of waste produced in the plant, including transportation to treatment facilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Downstream Module<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Focuses on post-production activities, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Transportation of machinery to the final customer.<\/li>\n<li>Packaging waste treatment, including transportation to treatment facilities.<\/li>\n<li>Energy and materials required for installation (if any).<\/li>\n<li>Energy (e.g., fuel, heat, steam, or electricity) used during the operational phase, based on the representative life cycle (RLS).<\/li>\n<li>Water consumption related to the use of the machinery.<\/li>\n<li>Production and use of auxiliary materials, such as detergents, lubricants and chemicals.<\/li>\n<li>Waste treatment, including transportation, for waste materials.<\/li>\n<li>Materials and energy required for maintenance (if any).<\/li>\n<li>Materials\/energy required for disassembly (optional).<\/li>\n<li>End of product life, including transportation to treatment facilities (optional).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Environmental impacts: indicators and assessment methods<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The assessment of environmental impacts includes 19 impact categories, supplemented by 9 additional categories that delve into three key aspects: human toxicity, non-cancer; human toxicity, cancer; and ecotoxicity, fresh water.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, it is critical to include specific parameters describing resource use and waste generation, thus providing a detailed and comprehensive view of the product&#8217;s environmental contributions.
